The Jungle School opened its doors in February 2007. The school currently has 56 students in grades 1-6 and 11 students in kindergarten. It is located on a steep jungle mountainside on the lower Cangrejal River, called Herradura near the coastal city of La Ceiba. Some of the children attending this school walk over two hours each way on slippery jungle trails in extreme heat just to have the opportunity to get an education. Most of these children live in remote, isolated areas and face extreme poverty conditions. Their families rely mostly on agriculture and when the crops do poorly, most struggle to find food. Jungle School provides a lunch each day for the students and for some it is their only meal of the day. Unfortunately the food supply is now running extremely low and without more on the way, they will soon run out.
After an amazing 9 months volunteering at The Jungle School, I was determined to go back to Honduras. This spring Lisa and I went back for 3 months. Working with the students and being a part of the day to day life of these children and their families has been life-changing. Though we have been helping teach the children, we feel that they have taught us more than we could ever teach them. We are so thankful to have had this opportunity and wish to continue to support the Jungle School.
We have created this calendar in an effort to raise funds to purchase much needed food to be sent down to the school. Absolutely 100% off all proceeds from the sale of this calendar will go directly to the purchase and shipment of food and to the continuing education of the kids.
The pictures taken in this calendar are a snippet into the lives of these children and our time with them. Lisa and I took these pictures between October 2007 and May 2009 and selected some of our favourite shots of the kids to share with you.
